On the 6th of July, 2024, I was privileged to share with the Google Developers Groups Umuahia on a topic titled The power of AI in WebApps, we explored the exciting potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by demonstrating how the Gemini API can be seamlessly integrated with web applications. But before diving into the specifics, let's establish a common ground by understanding what APIs and web applications are.

Web Applications: The User-Friendly Interface

Imagine a web application as a digital storefront. Just like a physical store has shelves, displays, and helpful staff, a web application uses a user interface (UI) to present information and functionalities in an easily digestible way. You access these applications through your web browser, interacting with buttons, menus, and forms to achieve your desired outcome. Whether it's checking your email, managing your finances, or shopping online, web applications provide a user-friendly platform for interacting with the digital world.

Now imagine that the storefront has a hidden backroom where all the inventory management, order processing, and communication with suppliers happen. That's analogous to an API (Application Programming Interface). An API acts as a messenger, allowing different software applications to communicate and exchange data. It doesn't have a fancy user interface; instead, it provides a set of rules and commands that other applications can use to access specific functionalities or data.
